One of my early experiments with still-life lighting, this if from my (rather substantial) collection of seashells and pebbles I accumulate almost every time I go to a beach.

This whelk shell (which now resides on my bathroom window ledge) was placed on a sheet of textured card and lit from the side with a torch to create shadows bringing out the detail of the textures and using a long-exposure and a macro extension tube. I like the fact that is difficult to get any sense of scale of the shell – the opening is about the size of a big toenail.
